ric woods photography enjoys a great relationship with Passmores Business College in Newcastle. This college has an amazing emplyment record for its students, more than 95% success rate. Each year maree and myself are commissioned to capture individual headshots for the students resume' , a group shot of each class, staff and a shot of the whole campus for the future.
We always have a great time with these bright students and very friendly staff. The only real challenge is the struggle to capture the large group in a room that is way too small.

Fine Art Nude Photography Workshop and Lighting Courses-ric woods photog...

"Three hours in one of Ric's courses has been one of the most valuable
investments in my phototography to date. His knack for explaining technical
details in a way that sinks in, and the snippets of information and tips he
gives
throughout the course make the world of difference. I personally
left the course with an enriched enthusiasm and found myself with a whole
new mental approach to my photography. This won't be the last of Ric's
courses I participate in"!

maree nichols the studio manager did an amazing job facilitating our recent Fine Art Nude Photography & Lighting Course. All the participants, our subjects Donna & Russell and maree and myself were on an inspirational high after the session. Running the smaller classes created a session where everyone had the opportunity to capture shots of Donna & Russell in solo poses and some wonderful ethereal poses of them both together on a seamless white background.
We discussed how some photographers making images of the human body cross the line by touching the subject without permission, maree and myself shared ways to communicate with the male and female subjects to create trust and move through awkward situations of nudity.

We began with a low light set built from studio props lit with a gridded beauty dish and edge lit with a large soft box finishing with bounced soft boxes and reflectors.Showing participants in practical demonstrations using the theory of the inverse square law of light, how to darken and lighten backgrounds without moving the subject was well received...Its exciting to see subjects faces as they " get it" and proceed to put it into practice.
here is a quick video grab of the session.

Special thanks to our subjects donna and russell and to maree. More information about our courses is available from our 21 page PDF Photography & Lighting Course Booklet

Sophie...Our Tiny Dancer_ric woods photography

Sophie has melted the hearts of all the staff at ric woods photography.
During her portfolio photo shoot she showed all the confidence and poise of a mature adult dancer...and at only 8 years old,she has so much time to polish that presentation.
Sophie and her mum ( who was fantastic with her styling) certainly struggled with her image choice...."so many great shots to choose from". One of my favourite photo shoots of the year thus far.Maree was in heaven applying stage make up to 8year old skin.....

"Cut Throat Carly" pin up photo shoot-ric woods photography

Carly commissioned us to create her "retro pin up portfolio". She came to the studio armed with a collection of amazing clothes and then her and Amanda her mother/assistant/coach layed out a wardrobe that we could have spent days shooting.

Professional presentation was key word in this shoot ,all the clothes came pressed and on hangers, the shoes we like art pieces. Maree did her make up magic and we were ready to create "Images with an Edge".

The most difficult part of the photo shoot was deciding which outfit was the best...The Sailor Suit...
This Killer "Spanish" influence full skirt with yards of petticote..

..OR...this huge cluster of balloons...

We also created a collection of romantic monochrome portraits at the end of the Photo Shoot...

Create Perfect Black & Whites Photography course-ric woods photography

We at ric woods photography get great satisfaction from teaching our photography and lighting courses. We meet fantastic people and there is a great joy in seeing the quality of the participants images improve almost immediately. Digital cameras capture images of a very high standard and we like to show people how to use them on the manual settings, believe it or not, with a couple lessons most are heading off to the photo lab with image files that are printing much more consistently.

Gambling,Girls and Guns...a mix that often ends badly

What a great mix of talent. Our latest self commissioned photo "shoot" was a "blast".

We compose these shoots because we love making images and it keeps us inspired it also demonstrates to the participants of our photography and lighting courses that fantastic images can be composed in-camera with very little post production Photoshop work.

Jessi and Maree ( right) were the Burlesque show girls in the shoot.Maree, my business partner, let go of her usual roll as studio manager, admin, second photographer and make up artist to be the talent in the shoot.

Jessi bought a great look and vibrance to the session.

Maree and Jimmy were there Friday night...Jimmy seemed on edge and when he is like that his friends know to choose their words carefully...

The usual Friday Night crowd was at the Warehouse

Left: Will,Matt,Brett and Jimmy.

Be careful what you say to these ladies Matt...they hunt in packs.

Friday nights at Brett warehouse are usually start out light hearted...

Usually as the night goes on the mixture of Money, Girls, Booze and Greed ups the stakes ....someone always takes things too far. Matt made a comment about Jimmy's suit....

It only takes a small spark to start a raging fire... Matt didn't see it coming...

The next day it was Mr William O who said to the detectives, Matt said he was going for a long drive.... Matt is still missing....
...thanks to all who helped on the night.

ric woods photography shooting for Industrea Mining Equipment & Metso Minerals (aust) Ltd

We offer our clients many services including high quality image capture on digital or film. Extensive digital post production service are available also.
These images (below) we compiled for a 2m high trade show banner for metso minerals. File sizes of 2 gig and more require computer hardware with "grunt" and this is what we have in our studio."Computers with Grunt"

Many of the machines we photograph cannot be moved from where they are constructed this is where our deep etch technique. We can drop our clients 80 tonne machine onto any background they choose, including white. We consider many factors in producing the finished image.Such as; the centre image in the banner above was dropped onto a background that was off white, this gives the impression that the mining screen white is BHP chosen colour looks SUPER white as the result.

Industrea Mining Equipment another of our mining clients wants their machines presented in the best way possible for their sales brochures overseas.
So after we capture the images such as the Grader and the 80T choc carrier below we then deep etch them and drop them on white for their graphic artist to place in the required setting.

The finished images have far more appeal.

Metso Minerals (aust) Ltd - Sreen and Test Bed photo shoot (behind the scenes)

Maree Nichols the other half of our studio takes shelter behind the whibal card (for acurate skin tones)

Metso Mineral ( aust) Ltd's latest Screen (above) mounted on the yellow test bed. This test bed is designed the SHAKE but NOT BREAK!!
The staff make fantastic mining equipment in their Carrington workshop.
As a photographer its important to tell the whole story, with and without people in the images.
The engineers want to see sharp and clean images as hi res files. This not the place for "art" shots.Consistent exposure with good colour in mixed lighting is very important. These proof images have very little editing added.Non are sharpened.
We shoot in both portrait and landscape format of the image and allow for text over image
Different points of view are included for our clients from which they choose their final images. Clients want to see staff and equipment presented at their best s we we do not send unedited images. The cost of post production of course is at an hourly rate, and that depends on the quantity of images selected.
Behind the scenes video (below) sorry about the colour cast that appeared whilst CRUSHING the video for the web and the soundtrack background noise ...
THAT'S INDUSTRIAL PHOTOGRAPHY !
It's a real buzz when the clients are pleased with the images we have created for them........

ON STRIKE-a reminder of hardship.

We did a shoot the other night to commemorate all the people who went through the hardship of being ON STRIKE to lift the working conditions in many industries.
Set up info: D300 shooting tungsten WB. On Boom 2xSB600s triggered by PW with 2xCTO.Camera left low hand held SB24 double red gel. gels.Camera right and left 2xSB26 no gel to edge light the STRIKER.More on our blog site.
Here is the talent carrying the flag for the STRIKERS of all nations. Chris did a great job. The management of the factory didn't like us shooting from a public street towards their front gate. They sent a couple of guys over to stand in the shot ?????? Terrorists??? Chris stood his ground.

Here is the crew, some friends, some students from my PRO AM photography course. They were great too, they got to see me trying to be as friendly as possible whilst still trying to get the shot I wanted.....

Below is the best shot (in my view), I would have liked them to have all their lights on as well , they cast yellow and would of added to the atmosphere but they didn't come on UNTIL we were taking our gear back to the cars.

Waterford County Shoot ...

Photography is FANTASTIC, I enjoy it a great deal. The people I work with are very creative and they do inspire me. Most of the time when I'm on a shoot I'm full of adrenaline and coffee.

Here is a short movie behind the scenes of a shoot from the Waterford County Land Development campaign. It was late last year on a very cold day. I had previously blogged a few images from this campaign but the small movie is more entertaining for some.

Being self employed it can be difficult to take time out to walk on the beach, eat a good meal, catch up with the family and have some fun creatively, like the blog...Today, I was able to do them all...and secure a new client from Interstate.

The creative for this shoot was under the watchful eyes of Jamie Gilmore ( Little Green Frog Marketing) and his talented crew of young bloods.
By the way all my experiences with horses have been a little on the edge...including this time....Yes they do smell your fear

I was shooting on a D300 Nikon ( Raw Files) Lenses were 80-200 2.8,24-50 2.8 and my fave 24-70 2.8. ]

This is the images as it appeared in the sales brochure...
