PB TOWAGE the the new players in Newcastle Harbour-ric woods photography

Thanks to the new players in town PB Towage, our studio was Newcastle Harbour and my subjects were the Ocean Caesar a 288 meter bulk carrier ( that's longer than 2 rugby fields) and Pacific Basins 4 Newcastle based tug boats . The brief was to line them all up and capture a panorama.Now that was a "group shot" that had me standing/boating way back..... At the end of the session one of the captains suggested that he power the tug towards our camera boat for a great shot, I have to tell you we had to get on the gas to stay in front....serious horsepower is hidden in these tugs..... Learning to Shoot on Manual mode -3 Hour beginners photography course-ricwoods photography

We ran a another beginners photography course the other night and the emails we received over the next couple of days from inspired photographers highlighted we are on the money with the course .Its theory and practical in a 3 hr session at the studio in carrington.

All the students are guaranteed to be shooting on manual mode when they leave the studio or they can come to another course for FREE


We talk about, aperture,shutter speed,iso etc. Here Maree talks to Barbara about the focus points inside the viewfinder and how they can be changed

Its a casual visual approach to learning photography.We supply a QUICK REFERENCE FIELD GUIDE for the participants , a remoder of what theylearned when they leave the studio


We show participants how to throw the background out of focus for their portraits..

...and how to throw the foreground out of focus to lead the viewer to important aspects of a captured scene.

Jason your a star !! We are often asked by our Corporate and Commercial clients about providing "talent" for photo shoots.Its not a high paid job but usually lots of fun for these "famous for a day". Jason (below) was the groom at a wedding we photographed and here Tile Rescue have used him for their website.They wanted someone that had an "open face and a likable smile"...Jason fitted the bill.


Miranda (below) was working in a service station whilst studying to be a teachers aide. I encouraged her to come in for a test shoot. Whittaker's Jewellers loved her for their "Nothing but....." campaign

Its great to see everyone get their 15 minutes of FAME !!

We had a great time creating Lyn's Portfolio.Lyn a very confident and talented business woman commissioned us to capture images for her to use on line.It was refreshing to work with her, she was fun,attractive, stylish and dynamic and didn't want to have the "plastic" skin treatment that many photographers are providing these days.We do lots of social media and portfolios for on line usaeage these days for men and woman, we enjoy it lots.

People can look very attractive without photoshop, Maree applied Lyn's make up and we were ready to shoot. The photographer needs to create trust and a great connection with the subject....with Lyn, that was easy.

Speaking of cool people Brett Fitzsimmons the the father of Autumnfest and a great ideas man needed some up to date headshots for his portfolio.Brett has such a diverse life he needed something that would work for Autumnfest ,the newspaper and something that he could include when talking to high end sponsors like banks and insurance companies

We were asked by one of our Sydney clients Blinds by Peter Meyer to capture another one of their projects.I was impressed by the build quality.

I thought the sensor that detects hi winds and retracts the awnings( above) is a great idea.

Electronic shutters control the sun coming up out of the water in summer.

Around us, dancing bodies writhed, rainbow limbs and wings and glazed faestruck eyes. Sparks shimmered in the air, the glassy fairy glamour that hides us from human eyes, and the scent of flesh and kisses fired sweet temptation into my blood. A typical midnight at Unseelie Court, the dark and notorious club where Melbourne’s shadowy underworld came to play. But tonight, I had an unpleasant job to do. The vampire licked sweat from my collarbone, searching with his iron-pierced tongue for my pulse, and my guts twisted. It’ll be easy, Emmy, Jasper, my boyfriend, had whispered. Create & Escape..a weekend away for photographers to learn lighting and photography

We took a group of photographers away to a resort and taught them some photography and lighting.Split them up into 2 groups and had a THINK TANK where they came up with some very interesting environmental portraits....then when we were finished...the resort made a food and drink...BLISS !! Our story begins...."Maree, having had training in make up for film, was frozen in her tracks as she stared at the fittings, equipment and vast selection of make up and hair products inside the Hair & Beauty Academy at the Tighes Hill Campus of Hunter Tafe.......I realised that she is having a vision what one of the rooms of Heaven may be like......" ha ha....ric

Vicki Davies a teacher of hairdressing approached us to capture the work of the teachers at the Newcastle Beauty & Hair Academy on the Hunter Tafe Campus at Tighes Hill. The focus of the photo shoot was to inspire and encourage applicants to the courses.The shoot was a great success and we were amazed at the craft,dedication and professionalism of these teachers.Their ability to work as a team was inspiring.The young men and woman who were our models were committed and stunning as you will see in these "behind the scenes" unedited proof images
